PEW PASTORS

An Article Written by Dr. Neil Chadwick

The purpose of developing Pew Pastors will be to provide personal contact with every member of the worshipping congregation in an intentional and caring manner. The organization of this ministry will involve the following:

    1. Approximately 18 Pew Pastors

    2. Five Section Supervisors, one of whom may serve also as:

    3. Pew Pastor Chairman

Each Pew Pastor will have responsibility for the people who customarily sit sit in a designated group of pews. These will be assigned according to normal seating patterns, so that each one will will have oversight of 3,4, or 5 pews.

Pew Pastors will be caring, outgoing people who can easily take the initiative in meeting and conversing with people of diverse ages and backgrounds; they will have made a clear and acknowledged commitment to follow the Lord; and demonstrate loyalty and support for the church's ministry and leadership. (Participation in this ministry will not be limited to persons who are currently members, although encouragement to proceed toward membership will be spoken along with the assignment.) The following responsibilities will be assumed by the Pew Pastors:

    1. Become well acquainted with every person who sits within the designated pew areas; learning names, and general information.

    2. See to it that the "Who's Who in the Pew" is passed each Sunday within their designated area, when there is no mention of this from the pulpit.

    3. Personally meet any person who is visiting the church, and who sits within the area, providing them with an information packet, and making sure their name and address is recorded and passed in to the church office.

    4. Assist newer people in becoming acquainted with others.

    5. Follow up with a phone call those persons within their area who indicate a need for prayer.

    6. When people from their area go to the altar at prayer time, the Pew Pastor will go to pray with them.

    7. Seek appropriate assistance from Sectional Leaders, Pew Pastor Chair Person, Pastors, Elders, or Deacons when a particular need presents itself that is outside the Pew Pastor's ability to help.

    8. Help point the way for people within their area to avail themselves of whatever ministry that the church has for them and/or their family members.

The Section Supervisors will select suitable persons for each designated pew area, and have an alternate available to fill in when a Pew Pastor is absent.

He or she will keep close contact with each Pew Pastor, to offer assistance, guidance, and encouragement as needed.

The Pew Pastor Chairperson, in consultation with the Senior Pastor, Personal Care Pastor, and the deacon overseeing worship, will select and train Section Supervisors, and Pew Pastors.
