The Fruit of the Spirit is: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control.

Introduction

    A. To "live" by the Spirit is "to be guided" by the Holy Spirit, as opposed to our being controlled by selfish, i.e. sinful desires. "by the book" like cruise control or computer operated highways

    B. They are called fruit of the "Spirit", suggesting supernatural involvement

    C. The life comes from within - not mere behavior modification

    D. Like Jesus was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit

    E. One fruit, many evidences

1. LOVE

2. JOY

An ability to focus on what is good, thankfulness leads to joyfulness: Paul in prison writing to the Philippians (where he sang at midnight) 4:4-9

Opposed to dwelling on the evil, the pain, the sorrow - "think about such things"

An ability to enjoy life - contrary to the "seeeerious" approach

Jesus, Others, and You - "I'm third"

The role of the Spirit: John 15:11 - in the context of sending the "another of the same kind" of "Comforter" (14:18)

I Thessalonians 1:6 "joy given by the Holy Spirit"

Ephesians 5:18 "be filled with the Spirit . . . ." Song, the expression of joy, in contrast to other music forms

    3. PEACE

    4. PATIENCE 5. KINDNESS

"chraestos" , "chraestotaes" - - originally, "useful" as in Philemon 11 (perhaps a play on words, servants had this as a name, closely akin, and sometimes confused with "christos") of things = "excellent"; of people = worthy, moral, integrous

mild, pleasant (opposite to harsh, hard, sharp, bitter), kind, benevolent

      God's kindness toward us -

I Peter 2:3 (from Psalm 34:8) - "you have tasted that the Lord is good"

Romans 2:4 "God's kindness leads toward repentance

Romans 11:22 - "Consider the kindness of God . . . provided that you continue in his kindness"

Luke 6:35 - be sons of God, who is kind

      Our kindness toward others -

        Ephesians 4:32

        II Corinthians 6:6 - in relation to the Holy Spirit;

Colossians 3:12-14 - based on the similar attitude of the Lord

The ability to be considerate of others (enact the "Golden rule")

Involves respect and courtesy toward all - to be on our best behavior (family members included)

    7. FAITHFULNESS

    8. GENTLENESS

Meekness - Greek = "praus" and "prauta[e]s" (gentle, humble, patient, considerate, unassuming) of things = mild, soothing; of animals = tame, calm opposite to rough, hard, angry, violent, bad temper

In Paul's other lists: Ephesians 4:2 and Colossians 3:12

In Pastorals: II Timothy 2:25 and Titus 3:2

      Jesus

Matthew 5:5 - Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Matthew 11:29 - Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 21:5 - the King coming on a donkey

      General Epistles

I Peter 3:4 (of wives); 3:15 - when giving an answer

James 3:13 - a characteristic of the wise, and the good student (James 1:21 - "humbly accept the word")

Not to be confused with "weakness" Moses the "meekest" (Numbers 12:3 - NIV = "humble") He did not fight to maintain his position, yet he was a very strong leader indeed.

Especially towards those who are in the wrong - Galatians 6:1

      Paul in II Corinthians 10:1-11

Note also I Corinthians 4:18-21 - Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in love and with a gentle spirit?

Too often Christianity is seen as the religion of wimps - we renounce and refuse violence of any kind. But perhaps we are neglecting our considerable strength: the power of prayer, the power of influence; the power of love; the power of righteousness.
