    To the average nonbeliever, Christains act no differently than anyone else. Our faith appears to be simply a theoretical construct, an emotional decision that does not have the power to transform who we are and how we behave.

    We must forcefully demonstrate, through our actions, that what we believe dictates what we do. We might strive to raise church attendance from the current 40 percent to 60 percent. We could seek to increase involvement in church leadership and volunteer activity to incorporate at least 25 percent of our people.

    Christians should be discernible as people of integrity and love. We must stand out as the people who sacrifice time and money to help the needy. Our decision-making should be overtly different because we are seeking to make choices that coincide with our faith.

    Mary's Dream

    I had a dream, Joseph. I don't understand it, not really, but I think it was about a birthday celebration for our son. I think that was what it was all about. The people had been preparing for it for about six weeks. They had decorated the house and bought new clothes. They'd gone shopping many times and bought elaborate gifts.

    It was peculiar, though, because the presents weren't for our son. They wrapped them in beautiful paper and tied them with lovely bows and stacked them under a tree. Yes, a tree, Joseph, right in their house. They'd decorated the tree also. The branches were full of glowing balls and sparkling ornaments. There was a figure on the top of the tree. It looked like an angel might look. Oh, it was beautiful.

    Everyone was laughing and happy. They were all excited about the gifts. They gave the gifts to each other, Joseph, not to our son. I don't think they even knew him. They never mentioned his name. Doesn't it seem odd for people to go to all that trouble to celebrate someone's birthday if they don't know him? I had the strangest feeling that if our son had gone to this celebration he would have been intruding.

    Everything was so beautiful, Joseph, and everyone so full of cheer, but it made me want to cry. How sad for Jesus - not to be wanted at his own birthday celebration. I'm glad it was only a dream. How terrible, Joseph, if it had been real.

    CHRISTMAS PRAYER

    A Poem by Lon Woodrum (1901-1995, Contributed by Sammy Poole)

    When the million lights have vanished, and they take the festoons down;

    When earth's once golden glitter has turned to gray and brown;

    When the bells have hushed their music and the carolers depart,

    Then help me, Lord of giving, keep Christmas in my heart.

    When the gifts have all been given, and the merry words decrease;

    When all the feasting is over, and the cheerful greetings cease;

    When the trees have lost their glory, and we have much less of mirth;

    Then, God, let me remember why Jesus came to earth. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Taken from "Christmas and Herod": +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Post Script: A couple weeks ago, a request was made for information concerning the "Signature of God." EXAMPLE

    I'd rather see a sermon, than hear one any day;

    I'd rather one would walk with me,

    Than merely point the way.

    The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear,

    Fine counsel is confusing but example's always clear.

    And the best of all the preachers are those who live their creeds;

    For to see good put in action is what everybody needs!

    I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done;

    I can see your hands in action but your tongue too fast may run.

    And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true;

    But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do!

    For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give;

    But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live!

    There once was a job of such great importance that Everybody thought Somebody should do it. Not being a very difficult job, Everybody figured Anybody could do it, but Everybody assumed that Somebody else would do it.

    After the passage of time, Somebody noticed that the job wasn't done by Anybody because Everybody thought Somebody - Anybody but themselves should do it. So in the end it was Nobody who did it - Nobody did what almost Anybody could do, and what Everybody knew was a job of such great importance that Everybody thought Somebody should do it.

    The job I'm talking about is the teaching of the kids. It's a job of such great importance that Everybody thinks Somebody should do it. Not being a very difficult job, Everybody figures Anybody can teach the children, but Everybody assumes that Somebody else is doing it.

    I trust that you are one of the Somebodies who are noticing that the job of teaching the children isn't being done because Everybody thinks Anybody but themselves should do it. We don't want Nobody to do this job; neither do we want just Anybody. Rather, we want Anybody who is called by God to teach, Somebody who is supported by Everybody in this Body to make sure that all the children of Everybody are taught by Somebody, so that nobody will grow up not knowing about Jesus.

    Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

    "But," one might argue, "He was the Son of God. That's how He could be forgiving."

    We believe that to be poor theology. Jesus experienced life, and for that matter, death, as a man. He chose to accept the cup, so He suffered as a man, and in His humanity, he forgave.

    Besides, aren't we also sons and daughters of God?

    And hasn't He given us His Spirit so we can "be like Jesus"?

    Jesus, from the cross forgave those who nailed Him there. Unknowingly, we do the same, but His forgiveness reaches us.

    May we too express true humility, understanding what He has done for us, and accept the forgiveness He has offered.

    What is discrimination? Simply put, it is that moment when we think less of a person due to some external measurement or comparison.

    Looking down on others because they appear to be different, dress differently, speak with an accent, wear weird hair shapes or colors, are diseased in some noticeable way, have what we think is a deformity or handicap - this is all the same thing, discrimination.

    Furthermore, when we say or do anything which will cause another person to feel unwelcome in the family of God, this too is discrimination; perhaps the worst kind because it could have the effect of keeping a person distanced from God.

    Perhaps you've heard about the dejected looking black man who sat on the steps of the church. It was about 11:15 a.m. when the Lord came by and sat next to the man and asked him what was the matter. "They won't accept me in their church", the man said. Jesus replied, "Now don't let that worry you one bit. I've been trying a long time but haven't been able to get into that church either."

    Let's take a moment to consider our own attitudes toward people who are different from us. Can we say with Paul that "the love of Christ compels" us to reach out to them? Or do we wrap our self righteous robes around us and comment like the man in the temple, "I'm glad I'm not like other men."

    Are you in the dark just now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? Then remain quiet. Don't talk to other people about it; don't read books to find out the reason of the darkness, but listen and heed. If you talk to other people, you cannot hear what God is saying. When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message.

    What hinders me from hearing is that I am taking up with other things. It is not that I will not hear God, but I am not devoted in the right place.

    Revival of Encouragement

    Perhaps God will respond to the prayers of millions and send the Great Revival this generation needs.

    Perhaps there will be an explosion of signs and wonders, blind eyes opened, lame leaping, AIDS victims recovered as a result of prayer, even the dead raised.

    We pray there will also be powerful preaching of the Gospel bringing conviction and repentance to the hearts of all men, from the factory to the halls of government.

    We long for true spiritual worship to replace the performance fads, worship which will reach the heart of God, not just excite the feelings of man.

    But in the revival we pray for, there will also be this, there will be "Barnabas" - many "sons and daughters of encouragement".

    This too is Pentecost.

    Gambling

    Life is filled with uncertainties, we daily walk in the realm of the unknown - we seldom know what will happen next, what will be the consequences of our own actions, to say nothing about what the results of other people's actions will be on our lives. Daily we take incalculable risks. Walking across the street; investing in the stock market; purchasing a gift when you're not sure it will be liked; climbing into an airplane - all of these contain an element of risk. So we purchase insurance policies, and hope to beat the odds in the actuarial tables. Of course we understand that some activities are more risky than others - bungie jumping, sky diving or surfing, climbing up Mt. Everest.

    Today, those who advocate the practice of gambling often will be heard saying, "All of life is a gamble," as though playing the lottery, pulling handles on the slot machines, engaging in card games or Bingo for prizes, or betting on the score spread is nothing different from walking out of your house in the morning. And the tragedy is that they seem to be winning the widespread acceptance of the American public. Whole businesses such as casinos are based on gambling activities, and most major sports have gambling connections. In addition, States, clubs and even churches are using gambling as fund raising activities.

    "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." . (Proverbs 3:5,6)

    THE BROWNSVILLE REVIVAL: AN ANALYSIS

    A friend sent a thought provoking analysis of the events taking place in Pensacola, Florida. Here's a couple of paragraphs:

    Sadly, the confrontation of pagan philosophies with eternal truth has taken a back seat to an obsession with superficial and meaningless experiences. Whereas inexplicable, supernatural experiences such as those emerging from Brownsville can be found in numerous non-Christian religions around the world (under the category of "mysticism"), truth can be found only within biblical Christianity.

    The unbridled and gullible lust for the supernatural has trampled the truth of the Gospel under foot, not only subordinating the importance of truth to the importance of experience, but also the fact of truth to the fact of experience. Proponents of the revival, together with mystics in all world religions, take the position that spiritual experience is self-authenticating. That is, the position of the mystic is: "Experience requires no validation just by virture of the fact that I have experienced it. Any challenge to the validity of my experience is an affront to reality--at least as I perceive it. How can you challenge what I have experienced?"

    Sadly, mystics seldom entertain the thought that they might possibly be misinterpreting their experiences, and/or that they might have been influenced into believing they were having an experience when in fact they were not.

    Rather than succumbing to the same errors of mysticism in various world religions, Christians need to return to the absolute truth of the Gospel, which is authenticated by the verifiable nature of Christ's resurrection, as well as by the verifiable nature of the Bible's truthfulness.

    God Is Real And Truly Working It Out ! !

    There was a Christian lady who lived next door to an atheist. Everyday, when the lady prayed, the atheist guy could hear her. He thought to himself, "She sure is crazy, praying all the time like that. Doesn't she know there isn't a God?" Many times while she was praying, he would go to her house and harass her, saying "Lady, why do you pray all the time? Don't you know there is no God?"

    But she kept on praying. One day, she ran out of groceries. As usual, she was praying to the Lord explaining her situation and thanking Him for what He was gonna do.

    As usual, the atheist heard her praying and thought to himself. "Hmph...I'll fix her." He went to the grocery store, bought a whole bunch of groceries, took them to her house, dropped them off on the front porch, rang the door bell and then hid in the bushes to see what she would do. When she opened the door and saw the groceries, she began to praise the Lord with all her heart, jumping, singing and shoutin' everywhere!

    The atheist then jumped out of the bushes and told her, "You ol' crazy lady, God didn't buy you those groceries, I bought those groceries!"

    Well, she broke out and started running down the street, shouting and praising the Lord. When he finally caught her, he asked what her problem was...

    She said, "I KNEW THE LORD WOULD PROVIDE ME WITH SOME GROCERIES, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS GONNA MAKE THE DEVIL PAY FOR THEM!"

    The Role of Father

    One role of "father" is to protect (John 17:11). A Quaker gentleman, hearing the sound of an intruder in the living room grabbed his gun and, from the top of the stairs, firmly spoke, "Sir, I mean to do thee no harm, but thou standest where I am about to shoot."

    One of the greatest horrors taking place in our country at the present time is that men who have been charged with the responsibility of protecting their families have become their batterers. According to the most recent year accurate statistics have been kept, over 1,200 children died as the result of parental abuse or neglect. And this figure is thought to be extremely low because of the great number of deaths which are wrongly identified.

    Beyond physical safety, fathers need to provide for other kinds of protection as well: mental (education, books, TV, Internet); emotional (are the children being affirmed or put down?); character development (who are their friends?); and spiritual (reading and discussing God's Word, prayer, church attendance).

    What if David Were A Baby Boomer?

    By William H. Smith, World Magazine

    My fellow countrymen, I have requested this air time on ISRL to speak to you about questions regarding my relationship to a woman you've heard a lot about in recent months. I mean, of course, my newest wife Bathsheba. You may have wondered about our marriage so soon after the death of one of our national heroes, her late husband Uriah. Many rumors have been spread concerning the tragic death of our son shortly after his birth. As you can well imagine, this has been a painful time for me and my family.

    I acknowledge that there was something inappropriate about my relationship with this woman before our marriage. I realize that my silence coupled with my previous statements may concern you. My assertion that I did not have sexual relations with my wife before our marriage was technically correct (for she was not my wife before our marriage). I was also correct when I affirmed that when Uriah was killed in battle I had nothing to do with it, because the battle orders were issued by General Joab. I, however, did not volunteer to reveal any information. You may feel you have been misled.

    There are reasons for my silence and my previous statements. For one thing, I did not see any reason I should suffer public embarrassment by revelations about one of my personal relationships. I have also been concerned about the impact of this information on my other wives and children. And I did not feel it proper for anyone to cast a shadow over my latest marriage or the sorrow of a recently widowed woman I have tried to comfort.

    But there is another reason, and it is the cause of the anger you discern in my voice and demeanor tonight. I have had enough of that meddling investigative and judgmental prophet Nathan. What happened between Bathsheba and me should have remained a matter to be handled within the royal family-and it would have if Nathan had not burst uninvited into my palace and tricked me, by taking advantage of my compassionate nature, into saying things better left unsaid.

    You need to know that this prophet Nathan is mean-spirited. In addition to exposing my private life, he has heartlessly announced "judgments", short-term and long-term, for my mistake. You won't believe this, but he says the death of our son was the result of what he calls "my sin." Can you imagine the anguish this has caused grieving parents?

    He also has the audacity to predict that, while I may be forgiven, I must live with the consequences of my actions the rest of my life. He says my family will always experience conflict and that I will be humiliated "in broad daylight" for what I did "in secret." All this after I replaced a failed king, united the country, defeated its enemies, and moved the ark to Jerusalem. What kind of man is this?

    Enough is enough. This matter is between me and my family and our God. It is not the business of the prophet or anyone else. It will be settled within our family and in the privacy of our personal consciences.

    I'm sure you agree. Which of the elders of Israel or which of you could stand up under the scrutiny of a prying prophet like Nathan? Citizens, and yes, even kings, have a right to privacy.

    It is time to move on. My family and I need time to heal from the tragedies we've experienced and from the unmerciful probing of this prophet. As a nation we need to deal with the current threats of the Philistines and Ammonites, to deepen our national unity, and to build on the prosperity I've brought you during my reign.

    I am confident of your understanding and support. You and I are flawed people. What we need is not confrontation and condemnation by priggish prophets. Let us forgive each other, feel each other's pain, and sympathetically help each other deal with the many arbitrary and unwelcome providences that disturb our personal peace.

    Good night. And God bless us, as we so richly deserve.

    The fact that Jesus taught His disciples to pray for the Father's will to be done suggests that it isn't automatically so.

    "But", we say, "isn't God 'omnipotent'?"

    Yes, but God's will is accomplished within the order He has created, the so called "forces of nature". While there are exceptions made when God breaks into this order with what we call a "miracle", most of the time His will is carried out within this order.

    In addition, He has chosen to limit His power to operate in cooperation with man's freedom to choose.

    Sometimes when I listen to people talking about "God's Will", it's apparent that there are some significant misunderstandings.

    Misunderstanding #1.

    Confusion between God's Will and Fatalism. This often gets expressed in comments about death, "When it's your time to go, it's your time to go."

    Misunderstanding #2.

    God's Will has to be clearly pointed out to them before they can get going. My answer to that is, "You can't steer the car while it stands by the curb."

    Misunderstanding #3.

    There's only one "Will" of God; if you miss it, you are doomed. But Jesus said, "God is the God of the living". His Will is not 'static', it's 'dynamic'.

    Misunderstanding #4.

    God's Will is relayed through personal prophecy. While we do have Biblical examples of prophecies which seem to be given for personal direction, they are very rare. In fact, in the story of Paul and Agabus, the prophet said that Paul would be bound if he continued to Jerusalem. Paul went there anyway. The prophesy wasn't for direction, but for preparation.

    Let's pray with Christ, "Not my will but Thine be done."

    Turning

    At the Prayer Breakfast this week, President Clinton read from "Gates of Repentance'' found in a liturgy for Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement):

    "Now is the time for turning. The leaves are beginning to turn from green to red to orange. The birds are beginning to turn and are heading once more toward the south. The animals are beginning to turn to storing their food for the winter. For leaves, birds and animals, turning comes instinctively. But for us, turning does not come so easily. It takes an act of will for us to make a turn. It means breaking old habits. It means admitting that we have been wrong, and this is never easy. It means losing face. It means starting all over again. And this is always painful. It means saying I am sorry. It means recognizing that we have the ability to change. These things are terribly hard to do.

    "But unless we turn, we will be trapped forever in yesterday's ways. Lord help us to turn, from callousness to sensitivity, from hostility to love, from pettiness to purpose, from envy to contentment, from carelessness to discipline, from fear to faith. Turn us around, O Lord, and bring us back toward you. Revive our lives as at the beginning, and turn us toward each other, Lord, for in isolation there is no life."

    Family members you wish to influence for God see you close up - warts and all. It's no good to try to find excuses for unecceptable and un-Christian behaviour by saying, "I'm only human", "no one's perfect", "God forgives" - as though that gives an excuse to continue.

    There needs to be the humility of recognizing areas needing growth, seeking forgiveness, making heroic efforts to improve.

    The literal meaning of "sincere" is, "without wax". This referrs to sculpturing nicks which are filled with wax by the amateur artist, but which readily come to light in the hot, melting sun when the statue is placed out in the garden.

    EXCUSES

    Excuses, excuses, you hear them everyday.

    Now, the devil he'll supply them, if from church you stay away.

    When people come to know the Lord, the devil always loses,

    So to keep them folks away from church, he offers them excuses!

    In the summer, it's too hot, and in the winter, it's too cold.

    And in the springtime, when the weather's just right,

    You find some place else to go. Well, it's up to the mountain

    Or down to the beach or to visit some old friend,

    Or just to stay home and kinda relax and hope some of the kinfolks drop in.

    Well, the church bench is too hard, and that choir sings way too loud.

    And, boy, you know how nervous you can get when your settin' in a great big crowd.

    The doctor told you you'd better watch them crowds, they'll set you back,

    But you go to that ballgame, cause you say it helps you to relax.

    Well, you have a headache Sunday morning and a backache Sunday night.

    By worktime Monday morning, you're feeling quite all right.

    Well, one of the children has a cold, pneumonia, do you suppose?

    Why the whole family had to stay home, just to blow that poor kids nose!

    The preacher, he's too young, maybe he's too old.

    His sermons, they're not fired enough, or maybe their too bold.

    His voice is much too quiet, sometimes he gets too loud,

    He needs to have more dignity or else he's way too proud.

    His sermons, they're too long. Maybe, they're too short.

    He ought to preach the Word with dignity, instead of stomp and snort.

    Well, that preacher we got must be the world's most stuck up man.

    Why, one of the members told me the other day,

    "Why, he didn't even shake my hand."

    Worry

    Anxiety is one of the biggest threats to our way of life. 4-10 million Americans are subject to panic level anxiety attacks, defined as:

    "An inner sensation that something dreadful and frightening is going to happen." "Apprehension, tension, or uneasiness that stems from the anticipation of danger."

    "Sometimes accompanied by heart palpitations, nausea, feelings of suffocation . . . all with no apparent cause."

    Here's one example: A 29 year old secretary picked up the phone to check on an order, a routine task. She reported that her "hands shook", palms sweat, there was a feeling of terror, so she put down the phone ..."

    Sometimes anxiety begins to be associated with a place or activity, or fear it will come on in this place, such as a car, etc. The result is often avoidance, ultimately, "agoraphobia", a "fear of the market place."

    Anxiety is usually future oriented, a concern with what will happen next.

    Jesus speaks these words in response to anxiety:

    "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear." Matthew 6:25.

    "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour (or cubit, i.e., unchangeable feature) to his life?" Matthew 6:27.

    "Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.

    "I have been thinking about all of the church dinners and banquets that I attended through the years, I couldn't begin to count them all. But one thing sticks in my mind, at those really nice get-togethers, when the meal was almost finished, a server or maybe the hostess would come by to collect the dirty dishes. I can hear the words now. Sometimes, at the best ones, somebody would lean over my shoulder and whisper, 'You can keep your fork.' Do you know what that meant? Dessert was coming! It didn't mean a cup of Jell-O or pudding or even a dish of ice cream. You don't need a fork for that. It meant the good stuff, like chocolate cake or cherry pie! When they told me I could keep my fork, I knew the best was yet to come! That's exactly what I want people to talk about at my funeral. Oh, they can talk about all the good times we had together. That would be nice. But when they walk by my casket and look at my pretty blue dress, I want them to turn to one another and say, 'Why the fork'? That's what I want you to say, I want you to tell them, that I kept my fork because the best is yet to come!"

    A young boy had been taught to count to ten before taking out his anger on anyone. One day his mother saw him in the yard sitting on Johnny, the neighbor boy. When she reminded him that he should count to ten first, he said, "I am counting. I just wanted to make sure Johnny's still here when I finish!"

    There's wisdom in waiting it out; talk about the problem when your anger is over.

    At a 50th Wedding anniversary party, the emcee asked the gentleman how at his age he could be in such good shape. "When my wife and I were married 50 years ago, we decided that whenever we would have an argument, the one who started it should leave the house and walk around the block. Well, 50 years of out door exercise does a person a lot of good."

    It was James who said, "Be slow to speak, slow to anger."

    What is the "heart matter" that matters?

    Some time ago, many churches were called together for what was called a Sacred Assembly, for repentance. But, like much of the rest of what we experience, we reduce everything to an individualistic expression. We "examine our hearts", confess what sin we may be able to identify, receive His forgiveness, and go singing on our way.

    But where is the cry for "our" sin? Where is the broken-hearted sob over the sins of our nation and the neglect of the church?

    The way to experiencing sorrow for the sin is to know the pain of those who suffer the consequences of sin - to weep with those who weep.
